Creative Land Summit at the Palace Hotel

Invited as the closing artists of the inaugural Creative Land Summit in May 2025, RUPTURE presented a new trio of clarissa, jose, and Gabriele invoking meditation on the ongoing genocide in Gaza with a red bolt of fabric and black tooth stain at the Palace Hotel.

Watermill
May - June, 2024

Following the woman in the yellow dress (Stephanie Hewett in this iteration), RUPTURE ferried an audience of Watermill patrons and arts kin into a first take on DIASPORADICA. We were collectively in residence May/June 2024. This work-in-progress featured our first collective explorations of aerial elements, with lowfly from Gabriele and Clarissa and jose on the big wall of the “knee” architectural feature of the main campus building. In this clip, jose begins their solo followed by scaffold play, our submersible inflatable, and improv in the dust of the campus grounds.

CounterPulse Gala
Spring, 2023

Invited as a featured artist for CounterPulse’s spring 2023 marine-themed gala, RUPTURE presented its first saltlick of research into sirens, schoolgirl chants, and pop-up performance for the donors in attendance.

Santa Cruz
February, 2023

Ojos de Serpiente, a duet between Styles Alexander and Steph Hewett presented in February 2023 as part of Tannery World Dance and Cultural Center’s Winterdance Feast, presented new takes on our ongoing research on two-step and additional games, particularly dominoes, to a Santa Cruz audience.

Beyond Gravity (Dark/Lessons/Rupture)
November, 2022

In November 2022, Jess Curtis invited Gravity fiscally sponsored artist jose e. abad to share work as part of a shared bill with Maria Silk and himself. What was meant to be a third preview of DIASPORADICA became a trio of clarissa, Gabriele, and Stephanie due to COVID-19, working with projection via live feed and a Ernie Barnes’ Sugar Shack painting immersive tableau vivant for the first time.

Black Futures Fellowship at Zaccho
August, 2022

Soon after returning from Germany, jose e. abad as part of the second cohort of Zaccho’s Black Futures Artist-in-Residence Fellowship (along mentor amara tabor smith and other local luminaries) brought the RUPTURE collective for a Bayview peek at the research done over the summer. In August 2022, we shared another take on KICKBACK, PERFORMANCE, and FUNCTION for invited community, editing the score and adjusting the work to the architecture of the studio space.

Oyoun
Berlin, 2022

Given donated space to present a one-night experiment in research gleaned from our time at Ponderosa, we invited a small audience to witness us in our first attempts at KICKBACK, PERFORMANCE and FUNCTION in the main hall at Oyoun in Berlin, Germany, in 2022. Wearing whites and grey, the ensemble taught Spades. Styles and Gabriele found a first pulse of their black grammar score. jose and Stephanie held court over the CDJs for a closing party.

Ponderosa Residency
Germany, 2022

RUPTURE’s first residency after forming in 2021, we spent part of our first summer in 2022 as participants of Color Block facilitated by Joy Mariama Smith and Ciro Goudsmit at Ponderosa in Stolzenhagen, Germany. Here we first experimented with improvisation scores that would show up in our first work-in-progress premiere at Oyoun.
